    The Authority of Scripture

    April 5, 2021

    Essential Theology for Troubling Times

    The Authority of Scripture

The bible, sixty-six books contained in one, penned by forty different authors (“holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit” - 2 Peter 1:21b), over fifteen hundred years with one central message - “…that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the scriptures.”

    (1 Corinthians 15: 3b-4)

The bible is the only book in humankind’s possession that is literally life changing and transforming.  It is life changing and transforming because it is truly God-breathed, God’s living revelation (“for the word of God is living and powerful” - Heb.4:12) to humankind.  It is this God-breathed authorship that gives it the authority, not only for our faith, but also for our standard in everyday living.   The bible reminds us that “all scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction.” (2 Tim. 3:16)

As Christ followers, we must always make sure that we are aligning ourselves with what God’s word tells us and not traditions or man-made rules.  God’s word is our final authority.  God’s word is indeed our plumb line (cf Amos 7:7), our standard to live and die by!

I love that old hymn,The church’s Jubilee, by Charles Naylor - “The bible is our rule of faith and Christ alone is Lord!”

Jesus reminds you and me that “Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away!”
