    Let go and hold fast

    July 14, 2021

The bible encourages the church in 2 Timothy to “hold fast the pattern of sound words!”

The “true church of God” are all those born again, those redeemed by the blood of the Lamb!

Well, to hold fast there are some things we need to let go of first, such as:

A pattern of binging on the news; conspiracy theories; give politics a rest; our neglect of the bible; more concerned who is in office than who is on the throne; past hurts; unforgiveness; gossip… “let us lay aside every weight, and sin which so easily ensnares us!” (cf. Hebrews 12)

“Let go” of these things and instead “hold fast” to the pattern of sound words.  In other words be “faithful to the truth” - God’s truth - the whole counsel of God’s word as penned in the cannon of scripture, Genesis through Revelation.  As Titus puts it, “holding fast the faithful word as he has been taught, that he may be able, by sound doctrine, both to exhort and convict those who contradict…not giving heed to fables and commandments of men who turn from the truth.”

“Hold fast” to the Holy Spirit who dwells in you - “or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own?  For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s. (1 Corinthians 6: 19-20)

“Hold fast” to true believers in the faith.  As Hebrews puts it “and let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works, not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching.” (10: 24-25)

“Hold fast” to the Day of the Lord!  Titus reminds us Jesus’ return is the believers blessed hope - “looking for the blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ!” (cf. 2: 13)
