“I believe the power of fasting as it relates to prayer is the spiritual atomic bomb that our Lord has given us to destroy the strongholds of evil and usher in a great revival and spiritual harvest around the world.” - Bill Bright
Do you agree with that statement? Whether you do or not, there is something to this topic of fasting. It is quite clear in scripture that fasting and prayer are biblical christian essentials of faith and practice. Whether a call to corporate fast, or individual fast - its woven through scripture, old testament and new testament alike. Fasting is defined as, “ a willing abstinence or reduction from some or all food, drink, or both, for a period of time.” I must confess, the only time I personally have fasted in the last year was a morning fast in preparation for my annual physical. But as I prepare for Sunday’s message out of the book of Joel, I am convicted of my neglect, and need to fast - not to change the world, but to change me - that I might become more like Christ and realize my total dependence upon the One who said, “It is Finished!”
“Now, therefore, says the LORD, Turn to Me with all your heart, with fasting, with weeping, and mourning. So rend your heart, and not your garments…” (Joel 2: 12)
