When you think of the role of the Holy Spirit, what descriptive words might you use? Convicts; purifies; empowers; reveals; teaches; helps; directs; comforts; heals; unifies -might be a few! Jesus told us, His followers, that it was needful for Him to ascend back to His Heavenly Father so that He could send the Holy Spirit - the third person of the Trinity! The Holy Spirit is a person, not an it! The Holy Spirit continues to work in us and through us when we are born again to accomplish the Mission of Reconciliation - that is, to restore broken relationships. We are not saved just for Heaven’s sake, we are saved for earthly sake - for the Great Commission (cf.Matt.28) Jesus promised the Holy Spirit would be with us to help us and empower us to accomplish the Mission! The Holy Spirit also manifests Himself in us through the “Fruit” that we bear, namely, “Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness, Self-control.” (cf.Galatians 5:22) We must all recognize our total dependence on the ongoing working of the Holy Spirit, individually and corporately as the Body of Christ. As we continue to be sensitive and obedient to the Holy Spirit, He will continue to work in us and through us for His glory!
