Repentance - a New and Living Way

    September 6, 2025

“Repentance - a New and Living Way”  Read Hebrews 10: 15-31

“The two most important days in your life are the day you were born and the day you find out why” - Mark Twain

Former retired Navy seal and four-star Admiral, William McRaven delivered one of the most inspiring commencement speeches that I have ever heard to the graduating class at the University of Texas in 2014 - “Make your bed” (You can still find it on YouTube).  I have this speech on the desktop of my laptop and listen to it frequently.  He speaks of how the little things matter.  He speaks of the power of hope and the power of one person to change the world. These are true statements (biblical too), but I think we have a hard time thinking that person can be us (you)!  Well, what does the power of hope and changing the world have to do with repentance?  Well, repentance by definition is a “transformative change of the mind that results in a turning away (sin) and a turning toward (God).”

True repentance changes our behavior and attitude. It’s an inward change that manifests itself in our outward actions and relationships.  Repentance begins in our minds and moves to our heart and actions.  We have many examples in our world and in our own lives of how one person made a difference. The greatest book of mankind reinforces this thought of hope and the power of change - the Bible!  And it is centered around the person and work of Jesus Christ!  Because of Jesus we have the power to change our eternal destiny.  Because of Jesus we can not only be saved from the penalty of sin but freed from the power of sin in our lives!  He has called and enabled us to “a new and living way!”  The authority of God’s word says that “His divine power has given us all things that pertain to life and godliness” (2 Pet. 1:3). “Let us draw near”, as the writer of Hebrews exhorts, “with a true heart in full assurance of faith” (cf.Heb.10:22).

Hope is contagious!  You have a living hope because of Jesus Christ.

You were born for God’s glory.  Live for the One who died for you and change the world, one person at a time!
